"Since I started voting, this turnout is one of the poorest, we can not achieve much if we keep showing apathy towards the election of office holders, " he said.

Downpour which began at 5 a.m.in many parts of Lagos State left many areas flooded and affected early commencement of voting in the local government polls. "We have been waiting for this grassroots election for a very long time", he said.

According to Ogunade, the 48 political parties in Nigeria should do more to discourage voters' apathy, instead of focusing exclusively on how to win elections.

"Despite the downpour on Saturday morning, my observation from the various polling units I visited in different areas, shows that a lot of hard work went into the conduct of the election".
