MLB Rumors: Sonny Gray Trade 'Very Likely,' Yankees Heavily Involved

MLB.com's Mark Feinsand reported multiple sources as saying the teams were "making progress" on a deal that would send both players to the Big Apple.

While pitchers both starters and relievers are no stranger to the trade deadline bedlam, seeing three pitchers with the talent of Sonny Gray, Yu Darvish and Justin Verlander is uncommon. If Oakland does scratch Gray from his weekend start, it pretty much ends all speculation - he will be traded.

The Oakland Athletics and Yankees are discussing other prospects after the Yankees said "no" on Torres and Frazier.

Gray is 6-5 with a 3.43 ERA and 1.18 WHIP in 16 starts this season. That same report mentioned that such elite Yankee prospects as shortstop Gleyber Torres, outfielder Clint Frazier and pitchers Chance Adams and Justus Sheffield would be all but untouchable.

NY has already been active on the trade market.

With all the trade rumors swirling around Gray, The A's thought it would be best to move Gray's next start to Monday, after the 4 pm EST non-waiver trade deadline.

If you take a look at the New York Yankees top 30 prospect list in the preseason and compare it to the mid-season re-rank, you will see mostly the same names across both lists.

Gray is under contract until 2019 and reportedly has drawn interest from a variety of clubs, including the New York Yankees, Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles Dodgers and Houston Astros.
