This is part of their other major announcement which is that they are now the majority owner of BAMTech, LLC which will enable them to launch their own video streaming on demand services later on. When the deal closes, Disney will own 75 percent of BAM Tech, up from the 33 percent stake it acquired for $1 billion as part of an agreement announced past year.

Disney has been talking about an ESPN-branded subscription service for a year now and the details the company provided Tuesday underscore just how cautious Iger is. The streaming company had primarily offered customers older movies and was just getting started in the production of its own series and feature films. Probably not another subscription to yet another streaming service, but that is what Disney fans will have to get following the news the business is pulling all of its content from Netflix and launching its own offering.

Yet films still account for about 30% of Netflix viewing and help prevent existing customers from dropping the service. Disney features such as "Rogue One: A Star Wars" often appear front and center for users when they first open up the app, alongside Netflix originals. "The Netflix service, or any service, is better off having them (at the right price)". That would allow it to bypass the cable companies it relies on - and Netflix - to charge consumers directly for access to its popular movies and sporting events.

"Disney simply waited too long to make this critical decision", Greenfield said. It's unclear how quickly Disney will expand into worldwide markets and until then Netflix will be able to focus on that subscriber growth, but this will certainly cut a big piece out of Netflix's pie and poses a formidable threat to the company's future earnings. CBS created All Access, an online version of the most-watched US broadcast network, while Time Warner created an online version of premium cable network HBO.

Netflix and Disney have been partners since 2012, when the companies struck a deal before streaming movies and TV shows over the internet had become an industry-changing phenomenon. Selling reruns to Netflix, they reasoned, could also bring viewers back to their TV networks.

Disney will soon own 75 percent of BAMTech, which previously belonged to MLB Advanced Media. The company announced yesterday during its latest earnings report that it intends to move its movies from Netflix.

CBS Corp. executives have said that their $6-a-month online service will give them leverage to gain more favorable terms from the company's traditional TV distributors.

With such a large company like Disney, it's already expected that they will come up with their own streaming app. He is convinced that Disney is capable of competing with Netflix.
