House 'blown apart' by explosion in Sunderland

Shocking images are emerging of a destroyed home, surrounded by horrified residents.

Emergency services have been called to a gas explosion at a house in Sunderland.

One shows just a pile of rubble and debris scattering the road with damage caused to the house next-door.

Northumbria police said on Twitter that they were aware of the incident and that emergency services were attending the scene.

"We have resources on scene dealing with the incident and will provide more updates later here".

They later confirmed the explosion had taken place at a "private address". "For your safety, we ask that people do not attend the scene", a police statement on Facebook read.

One woman said on Twitter her house "literally shook".
