Manchester United were handed a footballing lesson by Real Madrid for a good 60 minutes but they learned a few lessons in the process.

Lukaku pulled a goal back for United midway through the second half after Casemiro and Isco gave Real Madrid a 2-0 lead in the Uefa Super Cup in Macedonia, but the Red Devils could not find an equaliser to force extra-time.

United rallied late on with substitute Marcus Rashford denied by Keylor Navas and it was Real who held on to become the first team to win successive UEFA Super Cups since AC Milan in 1989 and 1990.

"I think we did well, I think we lost to one goal which shows the result was really short and one of their goals was an offside".

Bale was the subject of the most attention before and after the match given the ongoing speculation - talk he says has not thrown him at all.

Lukaku made it clear towards the end of last season of his desire to leave Goodison Park and said he wanted to join a team capable of challenging for trophies as he didn't feel that was the case at Everton.

"Everything has gone as normal like it has every year, there's been the normal speculation like there is every year". Obviously I think by bringing Mourinho in, it's kind of boosted the club.

"I think the players learned a lot from last night", Yorke said. "I'm trying to get my fitness up pretty much after not playing fully for eight or nine months".

By winning a few trophies a year ago, it did them great, and I think they're getting back to where they belong. But in general, we played a very complete game and we're deserving winners.

You've got a £50m budget to pick 11 players, with all the biggest new signings ready and raring to go ahead of a mouthwatering new Premier League campaign. "It was a very hard game but we got the job done and we've got another trophy and we move on".
