Patience has finally run out on Keaton Jennings after he averaged 15.87 in four Tests in the 3-1 victory over South Africa and he has been replaced by a left-hander who headed south to Surrey this season from Durham.

The three-match West Indies series, which begins on 17 August with the inaugural day-night Test in this country, represents a significant opportunity for players to impress before the winter's Ashes.

Mason Crane is in line to make his England Test debut after the 20-year-old Hampshire leg spinner was included in the 13-man squad to face West Indies at Edgbaston next week.

"Selectors would like to offer their congratulations to Mark Stoneman and Mason Crane who thoroughly deserve their opportunity in the squad", England selector James Whitaker said in an England and Wales Cricket Board statement.

The highly rated leg-spinner played two T20 games for England against South Africa earlier this summer, effectively sealing the series by having AB de Villiers caught in the deep off his googly delivery. Stoneman has passed 1000 runs for the fifth consecutive season and averages north of 50 in the County Championship but, on the day before the Oval Test, he was instead playing in a rainy charity game at Reigate, Surrey, where one girl fielded in high heels.

The return of Woakes, who took five wickets in the match and made a half-century on his championship return against Middlesex this week, is good news for England as he has been in the previous year one of their most consistent performers.

'Keaton Jennings will return to Durham and will look to recapture the form that earned him selection in the first place.

Meanwhile, swing-bowling allrounder Chris Woakes, who has recovered fully from a side strain that forced him to withdraw from England's Champions Trophy campaign in June, has been recalled in the squad.

Sheer weight of runs appears to have seen Stoneman force his way in ahead of Haseeb Hameed, who made his Test debut in India a year ago but has managed just one first-class score of more than fifty so far this season.

Joe Root (captain), Moeen Ali, James Anderson, Jonny Bairstow (wk), Stuart Broad, Alastair Cook, Mason Crane, Dawid Malan, Toby Roland-Jones, Ben Stokes, Mark Stoneman, Tom Westley, Chris Woakes.
