Giroud scored the winning penalty in the Community Shield last Sunday and, having finished last season with the best goalscoring ratio of any Arsenal striker, continued that form by coming on last night to clinch victory in a dramatic seven-goal thriller.

Danny Welbeck then brought Arsenal back level on the brink of half-time.

But Arsenal's pressure in the final half hour turned the game back their way and Aaron Ramsey equalised with seven minutes remaining before Giroud headed the 85th minute victor. Chelsea have the overall game for this league, they won it at a canter last season.

"Obviously for the neutral it would've been a great start, just watching it from the outside", the former Manchester United striker said.

"We kept the faith and kept believing in our game to push hard. Obviously we can build on it from there".

Wenger also stated that lack of focus on the part of his defenders cost Arsenal the first two goals they conceded.

Equities fall on rising tension between US & North Korea
Stocks opened slightly higher in the USA after suffering a considerable correction this week as the North Korea story emerged. If there's ultimately no impact on the global economy and corporate profits, it shouldn't disrupt the stock market either.

"That's what we're aiming to do", he added. "With a bit of work we can get that out of the system".

Arsenal welcomed Leicester City into Emirates Stadium on Friday to get the festivities rolling this season, and it appeared as if everyone would get a chance to use their Arsenal jokes for at least the next week.

Craig Shakespeare's side boasted numerous players, and characteristics, that saw them shock the world to win the title in 2015/16.

The lead lasted three minutes before Leicester's new signing Harry Maguire headed Marc Albrighton's cross from the left back into the middle and Shinji Okazaki nodded the ball past flailing Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech. "To come here and score three has to be pleasing in some respect, but it doesn't feel like it".

"We have to take the positives out of the game, we have gone toe-to-toe with Arsenal over 90 minutes and I don't think many teams will come here and do that".

"The first goal was from a short corner and we were not focused enough".
