Chelsea have not followed-up rejected lowball offer for Drinkwater

Last week, Drinkwater, who signed a new lucrative four-year contract said to be worth £90,000-a-week in August last year, reportedly told Leicester he wanted to move to Stamford Bridge.

Drinkwater has emerged as a surprise target for Antonio Conte, with the Italian desperate to add depth to his squad after losing Nemanja Matic to Manchester United.

The 27-year-old played a major role in helping the Foxes win the title in 2015/16 while he's also been recognised at worldwide level after breaking in to the England national team set-up.

However, he did partner exceptionally well with Kante at the King Power Stadium in 2015/16.

"We were in the bottom half for most of the season so this season we don't want to be there again".

The reason behind this is that the Premier League side want rid of the defensive midfielder for good rather than run the risk of seeing him return from an unsuccessful loan spell.

Roma have been heavily linked with Mahrez, who had asked Leicester to be sold and spoke in positive terms about the Giallorossi, but Shakespeare made it clear his club would not be bullied into selling any of their stars.

Regarding their interest, it seems that is likely to die down now that they're on the verge of re-signing Marten de Roon, also a defensive midfielder, from Middlesbrough. "Leicester know my thoughts, but I will continue to give my best for the club as I always have".

The Blues were beaten on penalties by Arsenal in the Community Shield at Wembley last weekend as they missed the chance to win their first trophy of the season.

"I think every club is living in that reality, so we have to deal with it".

Despite the rumours surrounding the 26-year-old, Shakespeare said he had trained well and remained in contention to be included on Friday.
