Federer eases into Rogers Cup semis

Roger Federer overcame a weak first set to post a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory over Spaniard David Ferrer in an earlier third-round match.

Haase will face the victor between second-seeded Roger Federer and Roberto Bautista Agut in the semifinals on Saturday.

The 36-year-old Swiss won 6-4 6-4 in 68 minutes to set up a meeting with unseeded Dutchman Robin Haase.

Federer broke serve for a 5-4 lead in the first set and broke again for 2-1 in the second en route to the victory in a little more than an hour.

Shapovalov showed no sign of nerves in their first ever meeting, the left-hander playing the more aggressive tennis by utilising his huge forehand on roundhouse swings and frequently attacking the net.

"I didn't, but I managed to win because I kept fighting".

18-year old Canadian Denis Shapovalov has become the giant killer of the Rogers Cup.

Next up for Federer is a quarter-final against 12th-seeded Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut, who defeated Frenchman Gael Monfils 4-6 7-6 (5) 7-6 (2) in a marathon tussle.

Unseeded Argentine Diego Schwartzman posted a unusual win over American Jared Donaldson 0-6, 7-5, 7-5 to advance to a quarter-final meeting with Robin Haase, the 52nd-ranked Dutchman who upset seventh-seeded Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 6-1. Denis Shapovalov of Canada defeated Rafael Nadal of Spain 6-3, 4-6, 6-7. The win over Nadal put Shapovalov into the quarter-finals of the Rogers Cup, making him the youngest player to advance to the tournament's final eight since Bjorn Borg in 1974.

Shapovalov had just three wins this season coming into the tournament. "He has a great potential".
