Jose Mourinho is bracing himself to miss out on landing a fourth and final summer signing, with Manchester United likely to go into the new season without the winger they wanted.

Guardiola, a former Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager, has yet to win a trophy since taking charge of City at the start of last season. Again they are starting to play that brand of football that we know Jose Mourinho does and in Jose's second season now, I think they will finish in top-four - they will do well.

The arrivals of defender Victor Lindelof, midfielder Nemanja Matic and striker Romelu Lukaku have also improved the squad. "I think it is the objective of every one of the top teams and every one of the top team managers", Mourinho said.

"It is hard to say what our chances in the league are but we are setting out to be on top", the midfielder, a five-time Premier League champion with United, said. "I just think he was very clear showing what he did a year ago was not enough for him".

"We are in a position to do quality work better than we did in the first season, so I am convinced that our second season, in terms of the quality of our team, is going to be better".

But now Hughton believes the Spaniard can put those experiences to good use to push his side firmly into title contention.

The United boss admitted he still remains hopeful of signing a wide player, with Mourinho having already conceded it is "game over" for their chances of signing Real Madrid's Gareth Bale.
