Carolina Panthers coach Ron Rivera says he wouldn't mind if quarterback Cam Newton didn't play in any of the preseason games as the 2015 NFL MVP continues to rehab his shoulder.

Newton threw passes to receivers during an individual period early in practice on Friday, according to the Charlotte Observer.

It was the first time Newton attempted live throws at training camp since July 30, when trainers pulled him near the end of practice because of arm fatigue.

"I'd be OK with it", Rivera said to reporters Friday via ESPN.

Rivera reiterated what he has said since training camp opened, that Newton's target date is the September 10 opener at San Francisco. Max Henson of the Panthers' official website said on the same day that Newton was throwing the ball with more velocity.

Newton had shoulder surgery in March to fix a partially torn rotator cuff and had not thrown in practice other than light warmup tosses since July 30.

Newton's most notable moment of practice actually came during field goal drills, when kicker Harrison Butker was attempting a 51-yard field goal.

Rivera was noncommittal when asked whether Newton in either of the upcoming preseason games at Tennessee (Aug. 19) and Jacksonville (Aug. 24).

But Newton has not played in a final preseason game since his rookie year in 2011.

"I'd be OK with it", Rivera said.

"We're going to do exactly what the trainers and doctors allow us to do, " Rivera said.
