Tillerson: Americans should 'sleep well at night' amid N. Korea crisis

"The idea that Secretary Tillerson is going to discuss military matters is simply nonsensical", Gorka had told the BBC in an interview aired Thursday, sparking questions about the possibility of renewed administration infighting.

While the President has threatened "fire and fury", and on Thursday added that his comments perhaps hadn't been tough enough, Tillerson has repeatedly said his interest is in applying "peaceful pressure" to get Pyongyang to agree to talks.

Instead, Tillerson put the Korean stand-off center stage following U.S. concerns after Pyongyang's two intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) tests last month showed it had the capacity to hit the United States mainland. "Secretary Tillerson is the chief diplomat of the United States, and it is not his portfolio to handle those issues".

Obviously, the Secretary's comment didn't go down well with Gorka who insisted it was beyond Tillerson's jurisdiction. In addition to restraining the warlike rhetoric, our leaders need to encourage talks between North Korea and other countries, especially China and Russian Federation.

Before Trump's election, the Obama administration supported the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal to emphasize its regional commitment and also to push back on China's growing power and presence, which is a concern for many ASEAN states.

He argued that USA policy towards the rogue nation will not stay the course of previous administrations. Aside from military force, scenarios range from a new round of peace talks to more aggressive actions like intercepting ships suspected of selling North Korea weapons overseas, one of the regime's key sources of income.

The MSCI World index slipped 0.15 percent, extending Thursday's 1.1 percent drop, its biggest one-day slide since May 17. The answer to this is naturally impossible to answer, because if we knew, the markets would already be reacting.

Trump's statements on North Korea reminiscent of Bush's preventive war doctrine
Fred Bell, the vice chairman of the Palm Springs Air Museum, has been analyzing US and North Korea relations for decades. A threat his military calls "a load of nonsense", warning that only "absolute force" can work on him.

"We do not seek to be a threat to them, but we have to respond to the serious threats that they make towards us", Tillerson said. Pyongyang says it will be ready to send its missile launch plan to Kim for approval just before or as the drills begin.

"I don't see a military solution and I don't think it's called for", Merkel said Friday, calling on the U.N. Security Council to continue to address the crisis.

The State Department spokeswoman said she wouldn't comment directly on Gorka's remarks, but noted that Tillerson and Mattis have a close working relationship.

"I said for reporters to force our chief diplomat, the awesome Rex Tillerson, to give details of military options is nonsensical", Gorka said.

There have been other such cleanup actions, and there will inevitably be many more, as Trump's advisers try to convey to the world a perverse message: Rest assured, sleep well - and pay no attention to the president's yammering. He's a Cabinet secretary. "He's the fourth in line to the presidency".
