The former England full-back believes that Antonio Conte's side is now weaker than it was last season, when they won the Premier League, and could not understand the reasoning behind Chelsea letting the Serbian leave for £40million.

In explaining his departure, Conte admitted how highly he rates the combative midfielder - further entrenching the belief that Matic was sold to Manchester United against the Chelsea manager's wishes.

"For the record I don't think Danny will go his a sensational player but not great to do what has done with this interview as been told to!"

"He gets the ball, he tackles, he allows others to play - you saw that with Chelsea".

'But sometimes I think you must accept this insane transfer market.

At 29-years-old it could be argued that £40m constitutes good value for Matic but after making 35 appearances last term, it remains to be seen just how much Conte will miss his midfield general.

So I don't think he'll be a huge loss to them.

"I have to say that it is a unusual move, it really is, to sell to one of your main rivals".
