Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is hopeful of persuading Alexis Sanchez to sign a new contract as he believes Paris Saint-Germain have turned their attention to Monaco star Kylian Mbappe.

Wage demands had reportedly been a huge sticking point for Sanchez, and Arsenal have now upped their offer from a previous one of £275,000 a week.

Wenger led Arsenal to Community Shield success against Chelsea on Sunday, but a return to Premier League action sees the Frenchman limited by familiar fitness concerns.

The Chile worldwide has been linked with a move away from the club this summer with less than a year remaining on his current deal at the Emirates Stadium and could walk away for free at the end of the upcoming season. He was odds-on to leave, but now he is priced at 13/8 and he is rated at 4/9 to stay put.

"For us, Alexis Sanchez is a loss, of course", Wenger said, adding that he was unlikely to have included the Chilean global in Friday's starting line-up regardless of the fresh injury.

"He had the scan two days ago".

The Gunners famously failed to qualify for the Champions League last season, for the first time in 20 years under Arsene Wenger, and performed miserably against Bayern Munich during their own Champions League campaign too.

"Some you know about and that's very hard for a group of players to cope with that - and some other reasons we will talk about on another day.

Maybe I made a mistake", Wenger said after Arsenal beat Chelsea on penalties in last weekend's Community Shield.

"Do you really think that you sit in the dressing room before the game and you think "Oh, I have only one year to go - I will not play well today"?"

"At some stage, I had to tell them, "Look guys, I am with you, but we have to win games". I just think we are not open - what I said to you many times - to any offers, anyway. If they succeed in bringing him in, Wenger will have a squad depth and quality that could compete for the Premier League title this year.
