Sharply reacting to death of 30 children in a hospital in Uttar Pradesh due lack of oxygen, Nobel Laureate Kailash Satyarthi said that it is not a tragedy, but a massacre. He had inspected the paediatric ward, visited a ward meant for children infected with Japanese encephalitis virus and cases of Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES). "Go to wards (of hospitals) and report from there".

He said that as the state government is responsible for the incident, compensation of Rs 20 lakh must be given to family of each child.

Reacting to the incident, Congress President Sonia Gnadhi said " I am pained beyond words by the tragic deaths of 30 children in Gorakhpur. "There was inadequate oxygen supply for those 2 hours, but the administration had ensured that there is no shortage of cylinders at the hospital", the health minister added.

Spending on public health in India, relative to the country's GDP, is among the lowest in the world.

"I have directed the DG Medical Education to allow mediapersons to enter the wards and talk to the patients, attendants and doctors", he said.

Thus he says that the point of shortage of oxygen is not true. However, to defend itself, the U.P. government has been claiming that it has no links to the tragedy as the hospital had oxygen supplies from various other firms.

"There haven't been any deaths due to lack of oxygen supply". Holding it responsible for deaths, the Congress party has demanded resignation of the UP CM.

11 children died on Saturday and until Friday the death toll stood at 60. "Only seven deaths have taken place at the BRD Medical College today and these were due to different medical reasons".
