Nine-man Chelsea shocked by Sam Vokes double for Burnley

Another simple short free-kick saw the ball pinged into the Chelsea penalty area and unmarked Vokes smashed home a powerful header into the ball of the net.

Antonio Conte promised Chelsea would do a better job of defending their Premier League title than they did in their last season as reigning champions. Robbie Brady then hit the post at the opposite end from a free-kick as Burnley pushed for a fourth.

The defender was late on a challenge with Burnley's Steven Defour earlier this evening, with Cahill brandishing his studs enough for referee Craig Pawson to give him his marching orders.

"In the next game, I don't know if Pedro is able to recover from his injury", Conte said.

"We scored three good goals and I think when you are talking about who you are playing against and where you are playing, that's up there as one of the best 45 minutes of my time here", said the manager, who joined Burnley in 2012.

Burnley extended their lead on 39 minutes when former Chelsea youngster Jack Cork set up Stephen Ward and they added a third before the break as Vokes headed home Defour's cross.

Mourinho reveals United are in talks with Ibrahimovic
Ibrahimovic, 35, was released in June after not being offered a new contract following a season-ending knee injury. Home draws were a regular occurrence in Manchester United's disappointing sixth-place finish last season.

Matt Lowton's right-wing cross found Vokes and he sent a bouncing volley into the far corner, with Thibaut Courtois unable to get across in time.

Fabregas and Cahill will be suspended for Chelsea's tough second match of the season, away to Tottenham at Wembley Stadium next weekend.

The Brazilian curled an exquisite 69th-minute cross into space behind the Burnley defence and substitute Morata stooped to guide a diving header past Heaton, just nine minutes after coming on.

Morata tapped in again soon after, but was denied by an offside flag after converting Christensen's delivery, which may have gone in had the ex-Real Madrid striker left it.

Any hope of an unlikely comeback looked to have disappeared when midfielder Cesc Fabregas was red-carded in the 81st after receiving his second booking. He scored off a Willian assist and then helped David Luiz to a goal with five minutes to play.

David Luiz's smooth finish set up a tense finale but Chelsea could not find the final goal to salvage a draw and fell to defeat.
