Two Indian soldiers, three militants killed in gunfight in Kashmir

The encounter started late on Saturday even when the security force on receiving specific information about the presence of some terrorists in the village, laid a cordon and launched the search operation.

SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) - At least two Indian army troopers were killed and three others wounded in an ongoing fierce gunfight with militants in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, officials said Sunday.

On Saturday evening, Kashmir's inspector general of police, Muneer Khan told a local newspaper that several militants were surrounded by forces in Shopian, but another bunch was shooting at the security team from an open area outside the cordon.

According to ANI, three militants have been killed in the gunbattle.

The slain terrorists have been identified as Yaseen Itoo, a top Hizbul Mujahideen commander along with aides Irfan-ul-Haq Sheikh and Umar Majid Sheikh.

The soldier has been identified as Nb Sub Jagram Singh Tomar, who got grievously injured during the exchange of fire and succumbed to his injuries. Earlier, one soldier was injured in a terrorist attack on an Indian Army camp in Kupwara region of J&K in the wee hours of the morning.

The militants fired at the Army building in Kalaroos area during the night, a police official said.

Ghaznavi joined militancy in year 1997 after crossing over to other side of the Line of Control.

Many civilians were injured when troops resorted to pellet firing on the protesters.

Meanwhile, authorities have directed telecom authorities to block mobile Internet services in Budgam district.
