A 32-year-old woman was killed and about two dozen other people were injured. A silver Dodge Challenger smashed into another auto, then backed up, barreling through "a sea of people".

Twenty-year-old James Alex Fields Jr was charged with second degree murder, three counts of malicious wounding and one count of hit and run.

The auto crash came after a day of violent and chaotic clashes between white nationalists and counter-protesters. "We have so many great things going on in our country, when I watch Charlottesville, to me it's very, very sad". You are not wanted in this commonwealth. "My message is clear: we are stronger than you".

Further tragedy unfolded earlier today after a police helicopter crashed into a golf course near the city -killing both officers onboard-as protesters clashed in its streets.

Punches and objects were thrown, prompting Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe to declare the state of emergency.

The vehicle may also have hit another auto.

Medics carried the injured, bloodied and crying, away as a police tank rolled down the street.

"I'm not going to make any bones about it". There is no place for this kind of violence in America.

President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump have called for peace.

"Violence like this will solve nothing and will only beget more violence and sow more division", said Senator Dianne Feinstein.

The clash is the latest in a series of confrontations in Charlottesville, about 100 miles from Washington DC, after it voted to remove the statue of General Lee.

"So, after decades of White Americans being targeted for discriminated and anti-White hatred, we come together as a people, and you attack us?" he wrote.

The organizer of the white nationalist rally encouraged attendees to leave town after authorities declared an unlawful assembly and police ordered people to disperse.

Many protesters "express beliefs that directly contradict our community's values of diversity, inclusion and mutual respect", Teresa Sullivan, president of the University of Virginia, said in another statement released hours before the rally.
