Shinji Okazaki scored another header to make it 1-1 three minutes later, as the Japanese forward latched on to a Harry Maguire flick-on from Marc Albrighton's cross.

Arsène Wenger expressed his relief that Olivier Giroud, widely considered this summer to be either on the move or a player destined to be not much more than a supersub, remains very much at the heart of life at Arsenal.

Substitute Oliver Giroud put the final touches on an enthralling comeback win for Arsenal as they beat Leicester City 4-3 on the opening evening of the new Premier League season.

The Gunners trailed 3-2 with seven minutes to go before Aaron Ramsey and Giroud swung the game back in the home side's favour at a euphoric Emirates Stadium.

ARSENAL'S ALEXANDRE LACAZETTE got his Premier League career off to the flawless start against Leicester at the Emirates this evening.

"I must tell you I opened the door for him at some stage (to leave) because it's important for him to play. He has a big weight in the squad and it was a relief for me that he made a decision to stay".

Giroud had been seriously considering his future following the £52 million club record signing of Alexandre Lacazette and Wenger's certainty but has been persuaded to stay in what is now a "super sub" role. "If you look at that from a neutral point, for a first game it was a top quality game".

"It is fantastic", Wenger replied when asked about Giroud's willingness to fight for his place.

"You win 4-3, you're more happy than concerned, you know", he added.

"Lacazette is simple. In every game he is stronger since he has joined us", Wenger said.

"We saw it though for 83 minutes", Leicester manager Craig Shakespeare said, "and to concede two late set-plays in the manner we did is obviously hard to take". I'm disappointed with the handball in the build up, but once the corner's given you have to defend it better.

"I went to a three-man midfield to get us a screen because Mesut Ozil was playing in the pockets and I wanted Wilfred Ndidi to get in and around him".
