At least 18 nationalities among Barcelona attack victims

Police said the incident was a terror attack.

A white van with blue markings accelerated into scores of people enjoying a late afternoon stroll on Las Ramblas, a predominantly pedestrian zone in the heart of the Catalan capital.

Police cordoned off the area and metro stations in the neighbourhood have all been closed.

No suspected motive for that attack was given.

A van has plowed into a crowd of people in Barcelona, causing several injuries, local police say.

Authorities said a Belgian was among the dead and a Greek woman was among the injured at the popular tourist spot.

Mr Willis said the attack had taken an obvious toll on the community with everyone on knife-edge and children crying in fear.

He said he would call on other Spanish political parties to reaffirm the country's anti-terrorism pact. "It was just going straight through the middle of the crowds".

Police said they arrested two men, a Moroccan and a man from Spain's north African enclave of Melilla, though neither was the driver.

"The executors of the Barcelona attack were soldiers of the Islamic State", the Amaq outlet said, quoted by Site Intelligence Group.

The van attack happened in the popular Las Ramblas tourist district, injuring at least 100 others in addition to those who were killed.

The regional police said in another tweet that they are investigating whether the Cambrils suspects were wearing explosive vests. They refused to say if he was one of the two detained.

Thursday's bloodshed was Spain's deadliest attack since 2004, when al-Qaida-inspired bombers killed 192 people in co-ordinated assaults on Madrid's commuter trains. In the years since, Spanish authorities have arrested almost 200 jihadists.

Spanish King Felipe VI vowed on Twitter that Spain would not be "terrorized" by murderers and criminals. It's not yet known if this incident is linked to the van attack.

A van has crashed into dozens of people in the Spanish city of Barcelona on Thursday (Friday NZT), leaving several people injured.

Albert Tort, 47, a nurse who lives in the area, tells the Spanish newspaper El Pais the scene of the carnage was a "real disaster".
