Kerr/Thompson to lead off USA at Solheim Cup: Friday foursomes matches/tee times

Record crowds of more than 25,000 a day are expected at the Des Moines Country Club - starting for this morning's foursomes - and as last September's Ryder Cup in Chicago higlighted, the mid-west fans are not slow in coming forward.

Assured that Thompson, 22, is nearly over a virus that weakened her earlier in the week, US captain Juli Inkster has reprised a successful partnership from 2015 when Kerr, who at 39 is the oldest member of this year's USA team, and Thompson went 2-0-0 in their foursomes matches.

Said Creamer: "I know I've done well here, but number-wise, I didn't know it". Music will be blaring on the first tee and players will walk through a smoke-filled tunnel to tackle the most nerve-racking shot in golf.

"I didn't come here to lay up", quipped American Gerina Piller.

Both captains have gone with their strongest pairings in what is set to be a huge opening match. Meanwhile Hull paired with Reid for opening foursomes in 2015 and took down Michelle Wie and Brittany Lincicome.

"Even if I didn't win one match and we won the Solheim Cup, that would be more important to me than individual records".

Hall is the sole rookie out of four in the European team to be picked for the opening session, with Kang in a similar position in a U.S. side that includes three newcomers. "And we shared our philosophy early on and they're going with our plan".

Kang, 24, a Solheim rookie, took her career to a higher level in June, earning her first LPGA victory at a major, the KPMG Women's PGA Championship.

Spaniard Carlota Ciganda and Caroline Masson of Germany will be next up for Sorenstam's side against Danielle Kang and Lizette Sales before Swede Anna Nordqvist and Georgia Hall of England face Paula Creamer and Austin Ernst.

Vice-captain Matthew, 47, was only brought into the side to replace the injured Suzann Pettersen on Thursday.

"I don't really want to have to play somebody five matches", said Inkster, who is confident her team's bench strength will be decisive as they defend the Cup they won in Germany two years ago.

Inkster confirmed that she planned to play everyone on her team the first day, but Sorenstam refrained from giving comment.
