US Affirms Readiness to Defend Itself, Allies Against N. Korea

The US and Japan have agreed to advance their multilateral security and defence cooperation with countries like India, South Korea and Australia in view of North Korea's risky provocative behaviour, leaders of the countries have said.

China, North Korea's main ally and trading partner, has urged the United States and South Korea to scrap the drills in exchange for North Korea calling a halt to its weapons programs.

"As you might imagine, we've spent a fair amount of time discussing North Korea".

Kono told Ri his country should take concrete action to comprehensively resolve the nuclear and missile development issue as well as the issue of Japanese nationals abducted to North Korea, based on the 2002 Japan-North Korea Pyongyang Declaration.

Any missile fired by North Korea towards Guam will still be on the ascent as it flies over Japan, defence experts have said, which means the SM-3 might stand a better shot of intercepting the rocket.
