Can US Shoot Down North Korean Missiles? Guam Under Threat

On Aug. 10, Bishop Oscar Cantu of Las Cruces, New Mexico, chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops' Committee on International Justice and Peace, sent a letter to Secretary of State Rex Tillerson saying that diplomacy and political engagement are necessary to resolve the differences between the United States and North Korea and avoid a military conflict.

North Korean military figures are putting the final touches on a plan to fire four missiles into the waters around the US-territory of Guam, to be presented to leader Kim Jong Un within days.

Expats and tourists will be in the direct line of fire if Kim Jong-un unleashes a missile attack.

South Korean presidential spokesman Park Soo-hyun told journalists Friday the country's top national security adviser, Chung Eui-yong, had spoken with his USA counterpart, H.R. McMaster, with the North Korean threat at the top of the agenda.

Ahead of Trump's latest comments, North Korean officials said the USA "would suffer a shameful defeat and final doom" if it "persists in extreme military adventure, sanctions and pressure", according to a statement on KCNA.

North Korea has been belligerent about their nuclear missile threat and has threatened to attack countries as diverse as the USA, Australia, Japan and parts of Europe.

Amidst the escalating crisis that has put Guam in the crossfire of a possibly nuclear-armed stand-off between United States President Donald Trump and North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un, the Archdiocese of Agana is asking faithful to "look to God in these hard times".

Meanwhile, US-South Korean joint military exercises are due to begin later this month.

On a speaker-phone call posted to Facebook by Guam's Governor Eddie Baza Calvo, the President is heard saying the potential strike would boost tourism. North Korea has always denied any wrongdoing.

Last week, New Zealand Prime Minister Bill English criticized Trump's "fire and fury" comments as "not helpful in an environment that's very tense".

The Pentagon also has options for a preemptive strike to knock out North Korea's nuclear weapons facilities.

Asked Friday if the USA was going to war, he said cryptically, "I think you know the answer to that". "In the President's words they are behind us '1,000 percent.' As the head of the Government of Guam, I appreciate their reassurances that my family, my friends, everyone on this island, are all safe".

The President also sought to reassure Americans of their own safety on Thursday, even as he issued another stark warning to North Korea.
