Robert E. Lee's great-great grandson OK with Confederate statues coming down

Donald Trump has said USA history and culture is being "ripped apart" by the removal of statues. "I wonder, is it George Washington next week?"

More than 1,000 people held a rally in response at the Lee-Jackson Monument in Wyman Park Dell Sunday and marched through Charles Village, rebuking the white supremacists and calling for the monument's removal.

President Donald Trump says "Radical Islamic Terrorism must be stopped by whatever means necessary!" "Just give me more".

That statue represents an idea of whiteness they refuse to relinquish; it is a part of a politics that trades on white fears, ongoing cultural wars that scapegoat black and brown people and policy decisions deeply rooted in racial animus. To try to change history and portray Lee as either a white supremacist or racist is to do a great disservice to the man and his sense of duty to this state. They drafted the documents that said our people were endowed with God-given rights from which this nation would be based upon; a totally revolutionary concept to the nations created around monarchies, ethnic groups, and landed aristocracies of Europe.

"Robert E Lee, Stonewall Jackson - who's next, Washington, Jefferson?"

"To literally put the Confederacy on a pedestal in our more prominent places - in honor - is an inaccurate recitation of our full past, is an affront to our present and it is a bad prescription for our future", Landrieu said.

On the other side of the issue, an effort is underway in towns and cities across the South to remove statues and monuments commemorating Confederate leaders and soldiers.

As the fight over the monuments and what they signify continues, other monuments across the country face removal.

"When you push the president to do something, he's not going to do it".

Donald Trump tweets discredited Islamic pigs' blood tale after Barcelona attack
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said, "My thoughts are with all suffering after the terror attack in #Barcelona ". The U.S. president's formula is pretty simple - kill those Muslims with " bullets soaked in pigs' blood ".

Michael Young drove all the way from Pennsylvania to take his sons to the Stonewall Jackson Memorial Cemetery that sits in the heart of Lexington. "Is it George Washington next week, and is it Thomas Jefferson the week after?" "You really do have to ask yourself, where does it stop?"

However, one Lexington Republican said, in this case, she agrees with Trump's tweet. He tried to leave, but Che stopped him, reminding him that he (Washington) did own slaves.

On Saturday Night Live's Thursday night "Weekend Update", Michael Che invited George Washington, as played by Jimmy Fallon, on to defend himself. "What about Thomas Jefferson?"

"If taking down the statues helps us not have days like Charlottesville, then we're all for it", Lee said. Because he was a major slave owner.

But once we get past Trump's stubborn refusal to stick to a position that might unite the country, the question of toppling statues must be addressed.

The brothers went on to say they have "respect and admiration" for the mayor's leadership, but disagree with his claim that "removal of symbols does [nothing] for telling the actual truth [nor] changes the state of culture of racism in this country today". Counterprotesters were indeed goaded into clashes - and a vehicle, allegedly driven by an OH man on the white-nationalist side, drove into them, killing a woman.

The white supremacist groups quickly clashed with counter-protesters in violence that left one woman dead and dozens more injured.

Mr. Trump's comments drew strongly negative reactions on Twitter from many historians, who condemned his "false equivalence" between the white nationalists and the counterprotesters.

Confederate symbols in Baltimore and nationwide faced a backlash after the 2015 killing of nine African-Americans at a church in Charleston, S.C., by white supremacist terrorist Dylann Roof.
