Unemployment held at 4.3% in July, matching national rate

For last month the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, says the state's jobless rate inched higher to 3.1-percent, still much lower than the national rate of 4.3-percent.

Weld County's unemployment rate sunk to 2.4 percent in July, slightly lower than June but more than a full percentage point lower than the same time in 2016.

"During these months, large numbers of high school and college students search for or take summer jobs, and many graduates enter the labor market to look for or begin permanent employment", the report states. So far, wage gains nationwide remain at about 2.5 percent a year, below the 3.5 percent pace normally associated with a healthy economy.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates MA has added 45,200 jobs between July 2016 and July 2017. The steepest losses between June and July came in trade, transportation and utilities, which dropped 1,900 jobs, and professional and business services, which shed 1,100. The education and health services sectors posted the largest decline, dropping 14,500 jobs. Since July 2016, however, San Diego employers have gained 20,400 jobs.

Alaska's 6.7 percent rate for May and June followed seven consecutive months at 6.6 percent, the department reported on Friday.

"If there are more jobs and fewer people looking, that will pull the [unemployment] number down", Weaver said.

On a year-over basis, farms lost 1,000 jobs while nonfarm industries added 7,300 jobs, with the biggest gains in government with 4,000 positions. Private sector hiring was strongest in construction, up by 1,900 jobs, financial activities, up 1,700 and information, up by 1,100.

The estimates from the Bureau of Labor Statistics show MA lost 200 jobs in July.

The data show a 4.2 percent increase in federal government jobs in July and a decrease in other services jobs by 14.6 percent.
