US JCS Chief Thanks Japan for Support Against N. Korea's Guam Threats

The meetings took place after Stephen K. Bannon, Trump's strategic advisor, told a magazine that there was no military solution to the North Korea problem.

"Until somebody solves the part of the equation that shows me that 10 million people in Seoul don't die in the first 30 minutes from conventional weapons, I don't know what you're talking about, there's no military solution here, they got us", Bannon was quoted as saying.

Bannon unloaded in an interview published late Wednesday by The American Prospect.

Bannon, in the interview, called for a tougher USA stance on trade with China.

Bannon named the acting top USA diplomat for East Asia, Susan Thornton, as one official he wanted out. When asked about Bannon's comments, the White House said Thursday his words "stand on their own".

"Strengthening the alliance will enhance the deterrence against North Korea, but will not be effective in directly leading to an abandonment of its nuclear program", a senior Foreign Ministry official said.

At the latest two-plus-two talks, the United States again assured Japan that Article 5 of the Japan-U.S. Security Treaty applies to the Senkaku Islands and that Japan falls under the nuclear umbrella provided by U.S. forces. The U.N. recently enacted its toughest sanctions yet after Pyongyang conducted its long-range missile tests last month.

On Aug. 18, U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Joseph Dunford reaffirmed Washington's "ironclad commitment" to the security of its close ally, Japan.

"There is no military solution, let them down".

But, he added, "what's unimaginable is allowing [Kim] to develop ballistic missiles with a nuclear warhead that can threaten the United States and continue to threaten the region".

The four officials have strongly encouraged China to take decisive measures to urge North Korea to change its course of action.
