Denzel Washington to flex stage muscles again in The Iceman Cometh

The last Broadway revival of O'Neill's 1946 play was the 1999 staging that starred Kevin Spacey as Hickey, the down-on-his-luck salesman that Washington will portray in the new production.

Broadway previews will begin on March 22, 2018, and opening night will be on April 26 at the Jacobs Theatre.

Scott Rudin, fresh off a home run with Bette Midler in "Hello, Dolly!" is producing.

Washington has always been a O'Neill fan.

Denzel Washington is returning to Broadway, once again fronting a revival of one of the quintessential Great American Plays. As a student at Fordham University in the 1970s, he made his theatrical debut in "The Emperor Jones".

Fearing audiences would reject the play, which runs almost five hours, O'Neill delayed its Broadway premiere until 1946. Though the original production was indifferently received, a 1956 off-Broadway production starring Jason Robards affirmed the play's greatness.

Washington, an Oscar victor for "Glory" and "Training Day", is one of Hollywood's most reliable stars.

He starred in the film adaptation of Fences previous year as well. Both reprised their Tony-winning roles in the 2016 movie.

Washington was last on Broadway in the 2014 revival of A Raisin in the Sun.
