Floods paralyse Texas as Hurricane Harvey continues its path of destruction

The storm has already dumped historic amounts of water, pummeling at least one Houston Metro weather station with nearly 40 inches of rain between 8PM CT, Thursday and 10AM CT, Monday, according to Weather Underground.

New Delhi: As many as 200 Indian students are stranded at the University of Houston post Hurricane Harvey made a landfall in Texas, said India's External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj.

According to him, Hurricane Harvey is staying in one region and that is creating havoc for people and the region's infrastructure.

Many Houston residents have turned to social media with heartbreaking pleas for help as overwhelmed authorities desperately try to rescue people.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said at a news conference Sunday afternoon that heavy rains will lead to even more flooding.

"Isolated storm totals may reach 50 inches over the upper Texas coast, including the Houston/Galveston metropolitan area", the NHC says. It was moving to the east-northeast at 5 miles per hour.

Harvey arrived on the central Texas coast last Friday as a Category 4 hurricane, packing maximum sustained winds of 135 miles per hour while pounding coastal and inland towns like Rockport, Port Lavaca and Victoria. It's expected to remain offshore tonight and to return inland on Wednesday. Forecasters said up to 8 inches of rain will be possible through Thursday, with higher amounts possible.
