Watch finalists strive for speed in SpaceX's Hyperloop Pod competition

Elon Musk's hyperloop "pusher pod" broke a new record on Wednesday, reaching a top speed of 355km/h (220mph) at SpaceX's one mile long hyperloop test track near Los Angeles. What's perhaps even more impressive is that it managed it within the 0.8 miles of SpaceX's Hyperloop test track.

Two dozen teams of students from around the globe will compete in Hawthorne Sunday in hopes of providing a critical component for Elon Musk's revolutionary form of high-speed travel known as Hyperloop.

Tesla has held two Hyperloop competitions this year with the recent victor, WARR Hyperloop, reaching a top speed of 325 km/h (202 mph).

There are plans to install a hyperloop taking passengers from London to Edinburgh (via Birmingham and Manchester) in 50 minutes.

Hart is England's best - Southgate defends under-fire goalkeeper
Gareth Southgate is keeping the faith with Joe Hart as England's No. 1, insisting he remains the best goalkeeper in the country. Southgate says he has chosen who will captain England but the players will not be informed until Friday.

Musk's pod was previously used to push-start some of the student entries for the hyperloop competition, but earlier this week the billionaire entrepreneur made a decision to run the pod at high speed.

Rival companies like Hyperloop One have already started building full-scale test tracks and in July it unveiled what the hyperloop vehicle might look like.

As it turned out, the pod just about trumped the winning team achieving a top speed of 355kph, but Musk added that at that point things began to heat up, and not in a good way describing it as like "racing in a tugboat". Still, the company thinks it can get past 500 km per hour (roughly half speed of sound) within a month. The idea for the version of the hyperloop transportation system now being developed was floated in 2013 by Tesla boss Elon Musk.
