SEAT Leon Cupra R shows its claws ahead of a Frankfurt debut

Seat has unveiled its most powerful model ever ahead of the Frankfurt Motor show. Just 799 being built.

In six-speed manual form the unit produces 228kW, while in six-speed dual-clutch auto form it generates 221kW.

Absent from the Leon range since the second-generation Leon was replaced by the current model in 2012, the new Cupra R is meant to compete with high-end hot hatchbacks like the 316bhp Honda Civic Type R, 306bhp Volkswagen Golf R and 345bhp Ford Focus RS. A limited-slip differential should help quell excessive wheel-spin and improve traction, while the exhaust system has also been modified to provide an even fruitier exhaust note. Most obvious are the new flared wheel-arches, giving the Cupra R a more aggressive stance on the road.

Just 799 units of the Cupra R will be produced, Seat boss Luca De Meo announced this morning, with an exclusive matte exterior finish available, copper detailing and bucket seats distinguishing the auto from the standard Cupra. Massive Brembo brakes do deceleration duties.

Bell's Curve: Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell returns to work
He's only played a full 16-game schedule once in his four seasons, with the other three shortened by injury, suspension or both. And I'm also glad that it wasn't a case of Bell choosing not to respond back to his quarterback.

Houston Rockets to sell for National Basketball Association record $2.2 billion
The Rockets sale would eclipse the record of Steve Ballmer's $ 2 billion purchase of the LA Clippers in 2014. He is the owner of the Landry's restaurant chain and Golden Nugget casino and hotels.

The wheelarches have been swollen, while front and rear spoilers, side sills and the rear diffuser are made from carbon fibre - the de rigueur material of the modern hot hatchback.

In addition to the Leon Cupra R, the manufacturer announces that it will present the organization of future Cupra projects in Frankfurt. Inside, the Cupra has also had the copper and carbon-fibre treatment, and a steering wheel specially upholstered in Alcantara, of which there are three colours to choose from; black, grey and the exclusive matte grey.

Seat previously produced a Leon Cupra R between 2002 and 2005, before resurrecting the name in 2010 on the second-generation Leon, with an extra 24bhp over the standard Cupra model.

SEAT will be giving the auto a proper public debut at the Frankfurt motor show later this month.
