No general secretary now in AIADMK: Jayakumar

The decks were cleared for the 12 September general council and executive committee meeting called by Chief Minister E Palaniswamy-led faction after the Madras High Court on Monday dismissed a plea by an MLA owing allegiance to sidelined AIADMK deputy chief TTV Dhinakaran.

The resolutions expected to be passed by the general council, under the chairmanship of presidium chairman E. Madhusudhanan, are sacking of V. K. Sasikala from the general secretary's post and setting up of a steering committee that will take care of party affairs until a new chief is chosen.

Chennai: "There is no general secretary now", fisheries minister D. Jayakumar said on Monday when asked to comment on objection raised by TTV Dhinakaran faction that the general council of the party scheduled on Tuesday was "illegal" since it can not be convened without the approval of the general secretary.

Following the legal battle, on Monday night, Sasikala's nephew Dhinakaran threatened to topple the Palaniswami government.

"The AIADMK constitution and the by-laws say that if one-fifth of the general council members want general council meeting, it can be convened". The general council will be followed by an executive council meet. This decision is likely to be taken on October 23 on hearing of a plea by a Sasikala loyalist to impose stay on the gathering.

The court even asked Vetrivel that if he was so annoyed with the meeting he should stay at home and there was no need to file the petition.
