Four passenger airliners operated by two major US passenger air carriers (United Airlines and American Airlines) - all of which departed from airports in the northeastern United States bound for California - were hijacked by 19 al-Qaeda terrorists. As in years past, the moments below will be observed as part of the official 9/11 anniversary ceremony held at the World Trade Center for victims' families.

Just 18 minutes after the first plane crashed into the WTC, a second Boeing 767 - United Airlines Flight 175 - sliced into the south tower near the 60th floor.

At 10:28 a.m. the north tower collapsed. The structural steel of the skyscraper apparently could not withstand the tremendous heat generated by the burning jet fuel.

The attacks unfolded on TV as millions of Americans watched in horror and wondered when or if they would be safe again.

A somber ritual that includes the tolling of bells and a reading of the victims' names is underway in Pennsylvania, honoring the 33 passengers and seven crew members killed in the terror attack on United Flight 93. Those on board the jet had learned about the events unfolding in NY as the plane delayed in taking off. He knew flight attendant CeeCee Ross Lyles. That plane, also bound for Washington, went down in a field in rural Pennsylvania.

Americans commemorated 9/11 on Monday with tear-streaked tributes, a presidential warning to terrorists and appeals from victims' relatives for unity and hope 16 years after the deadliest terrorist attack on USA soil. Conspiracy theorists have claimed over the years that the United States government was involved in the attacks.

The ceremony will kick off with a citywide moment of silence at 8:46 a.m. - the moment hijackers flew American Airlines Flight 11 into the north tower.

"It is an emotional response more than anything...the towers are like ghost limbs, we can feel them even though they're not there anymore".

A third plane, American Airlines Flight 77, was crashed into the Pentagon (the headquarters of the United States Department of Defense) in Arlington County, Virginia, leading to a partial collapse of the building's western side.
