All 30 Major League Baseball teams to open 2018 season

In recent years, Major League Baseball has opted to start things off with a small number of games on the first Sunday of April - there were three this year - before scheduling the rest of its teams to open the following Monday.

The 2018 Major League Baseball season will begin on March 29, the earliest start in the sport's history excluding global openers.

That means that in a season with an overseas opener, there could be three different Opening Days: official Opening Day, domestic Opening Day and the day after domestic Opening Day, when most teams play their first game.

Major League Baseball released its 2018 schedule Tuesday and normally that's not super exciting unless you're planning a summer road trip or eager to see which interleague games are heading your way. Knowing how Major League Baseball operates, however, it'll probably still start in the afternoon and go up against all of the other live games. The Twins will host the games, which will mark the first regular-season action on the island since the New York Mets faces the then-Florida Marlins in 2010. The rest of baseball gets Thursday off, as they have in recent years. The early kickoff will provide teams with three to four extra rest days spread throughout the season.

The simplification of Opening Day isn't the only big change to the schedule.

The previously earliest North American opener was March 30, which occurred in 2003, 2008 and 2014. The new format extends the length of the season by adding an additional weekend of play at the beginning of the season. That seems like a no-brainer, but it's actually not common at all.

The season begins the Thursday before Easter, and six teams will have Easter Sunday off, which is an odd baseball occurrence. And unlike years past, where the league has staggered openers, every team will begin play on the same day, the first time that's happened since 1968. Twelve teams will have Friday, March 30 off, which isn't common either. The last day of regular season play is scheduled for September 30.
