South Korea watches for North Korea missile test

Putin, speaking in China on Tuesday, had condemned the nuclear test as provocative, but said that Russian Federation views sanctions on North Korea as "useless and ineffective".

"A special measure is urgently needed to stop their recklessness".

Developing such a weapon would significantly bolster South Korea's capacity for action independent of its ally the USA, which has kept a strong military presence in the country since the Korean War and has its own arsenal of "bunker buster" bombs with payloads of up to 2,400kg (5,300lbs).

In South Korea, thousands of police officers in riot gear swarmed 400 protesters who had been occupying a road leading to the site where THAAD is installed in the rural town of Seongju.

Speaking in a White House news conference alongside the visiting leader of Kuwait, Trump said, "Military action would certainly be an option".

Putin and Abe held a bilateral meeting Thursday, after which both leaders reiterated their countries shared a common understanding of the threat that North Korea poses.

"South Korea is the world's second-largest importer of gas".

Professor Kwon Yong Soo, at Korea National Defense University, told the Strait Times: "The measure would dramatically boost South Korea's retaliation capability against North Korea".

Guterres's comments came hours after a top North Korean diplomat warned that his country is ready to send "more gift packages" to the United States.

After a phone call with Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping on how to deal with North Korea's threatening nuclear and ballistic missile programs, Trump did not rule out military strikes, saying "we will see what happens".

Trump, in a joint appearance with the Kuwaiti emir, said attempts at diplomacy with Pyongyang had failed over the past decades.

South Korean local residents are protesting against the US THAAD deployment missile systems.

As the USA and its allies scramble to cook up sanctions tough enough to curb North Korea's weapons program or bring it to the table, many have pointed out that decades of diplomacy and sanctions have failed to contain Pyongyang's nuclear breakout.
