Trump marks 9/11 with threat to 'savage killers'

The solemn occasion started with a moment of silence with bells chiming in the background, and relatives and others reading out names of the nearly 3,000 victims killed in the deadliest terrorist attacks carried out on USA soil.

Trump also offered words of comfort the many whose loved ones perished in the attacks.

Thousands of Americans on Monday paid tribute to the 2,977 people killed on September 11, 2001, when four hijacked planes slammed into the World Trade Centre, the Pentagon and a field near Shanksville.

Reflecting on a tragedy that still feels immediate to them, victims' relatives thanked first responders and the military, anxious for people affected by Hurricane Irma as it continued its destructive path as a tropical storm and pleaded for a return to the sense of cohesiveness that followed the attacks.

"Our country came together that day", she said, the AP added.

A tearful Magaly Lemagne - who lost her brother, Port Authority of NY and New Jersey Police Officer David Lemagne on 9/11 - said the memory of that bad moment should once again unite Americans, the outlet reported. She implored people to "stop for a moment and remember all the people who gave their lives that day".

"The terrorists who attacked us thought they could incite fear and weaken our spirit but America cannot be intimidated", Trump continued.

The U.S. on Monday is marking the 16th anniversary of the terrorist attack that killed almost 3,000.
