Trump to Visit Florida as State Slowly Recovers From Hurricane Irma

President Donald Trump met with federal and state leaders in Florida on Thursday as he surveyed damage from Hurricane Irma and praised the rapid response of the recovery effort.

The White House had previously teased plans for Trump to visit Florida but said any trip would not be finalized until the situation there had stabilized to the point that a presidential visit would not add undue stress to local authorities.

Shortly after, first lady Melania Trump tweeted that she would accompany her husband to Florida on Thursday.

During questions with reporters Thursday morning, Mr. Trump also addressed his DACA negotiations with Democrats Rep. Nancy Pelosi and Sen. "I'll be back here numerous times".

In Lee County, which includes Cape Coral and Fort Myers, the Florida Emergency Management Agency said 66 percent of the area's 290,000 electrical customers were still without power Wednesday.

Millions are still without power across Florida, and several areas have been devastated by Irma, especially the Florida Keys. Trump tweeted Wednesday that he planned to meet "with our great Coast Guard, FEMA and numerous fearless first responders & others".

However, he did test positive for a combination of drugs that weren't safe to mix. Carter also said he does get his prescription drugs "off of the streets".

Hurricane Irma has slammed into southwest Florida, threatening to bring risky storm surges to coastal areas, already battered by the hurricane's powerful winds.

"When you think of the incredible power of that storm, and while people unfortunately passed, it was such a small number", Trump said.

The first lady says she's set to meet with FEMA and "people affected by #HurricaneIrma", tweeting out a video as she lifts off from the South Lawn en route to Joint Andrews air force base. He said, 'DACA, we're going to do it early.

Hurricane Irma slowed to a Category Two storm after making its second landfall in Florida on Sunday, US forecasters said, warning it still had "dangerous" winds causing "life-threatening" storm surges, AFP reports.

Scott hasn't decided on a future Senate campaign.
