Cuomo plans Friday trip to US Virgin Islands

Cuomo announced the deployment of members of the New York National Guard and personnel from the New York State Police to the U.S. Virgin Islands after touring areas impacted by Hurricane Irma.

Cuomo surveyed damage from the air before touring a damaged apartment building and meeting with Virgin Islands Gov. Kenneth Mapp and other top officials from the islands. "With this funding, we can offer expanded services and offer support to New Yorkers dealing with substance abuse, putting them on the road to recovery and helping to build a stronger, healthier Empire State for all". Additionally, Airmen from the 105th Airlift Wing deployed a satellite communication team with seven personnel to MS using a C-17 aircraft on Sunday, September 10 as part of the Hurricane Irma response and support for the Florida National Guard.

NY is sending National Guard troops and State Police to the U.S. Virgin Islands this weekend to help with the cleanup after Hurricane Irma destroyed much of the Caribbean islands.

Cuomo departed Friday morning for the Caribbean islands and plans return home in the evening. I want to thank the Governor, who has extensive experience in post storm recovery both from his time as HUD Secretary and as New York State Governor in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, for partnering with us in the huge task we have ahead.

"New Yorkers know first-hand the damage Mother Nature's fury can cause, and we are proud to be providing expertise, equipment, and personnel to support the U.S. Virgin Islands on their path to recovery, because helping neighbors in need is the NY way", Cuomo said.

Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg visited the island on Thursday.

The trip will likely fuel speculation about a possible presidential campaign.
