Women win big at Emmys

Dreyfus, who won her eighth Emmy for outstanding lead actress for her role as Selina Meyers - and her sixth for that part alone - revealed the dropped plot line to laughs during her speech.

Louis-Dreyfus joked that they had planned a storyline about an impeachment "but we abandoned that because we were anxious someone else might get to it first". A third person joked: "Julia Louis Dreyfus is like the Meryl Streep of TV". Her first Emmy win was when she was 35.

The 56-year-old actress has won more Emmys than anyone in history.

Louis-Dreyfus starting racking up Emmys in 1996, when she won outstanding supporting actress in a comedy series for Seinfeld (she'd been nominated each year since 1992).

The Handmaid's Tale cleaned up in the drama category, winning awards for its lead and supporting actresses-Elisabeth Moss and Ann Dowd-as well as for writing and direction.
