Another case of West Nile virus found in SC

Past year there were six deaths from West Nile in IL.

This year's first confirmed human case of West Nile Virus in a Rock County resident was reported Tuesday, according to a report from the Rock County Public Health Department.

IDPH reported four out five human cases don't involve any symptoms.

The Illinois Department of Public Heath said the Kankakee County resident tested positive for the disease and died earlier this month.

People who do become ill after contracting the virus may develop a fever, headache and rash that lasts a few days.

"Although we will soon start seeing cooler weather, West Nile virus is still a concern", said IDPH Director Nirav D. Shah, M.D., J.D.

In rare cases, severe illness including meningitis or encephalitis, or even death, can occur. People over the age of 50, like Duncan, are at greatest risk for serious illness or death.

IDPH leaders say people should also avoid areas with standing water, such as old tires or buckets, where mosquitoes can breed.
