Magnitude Earthquake Rocks Mexico City

Its epicentre was 4.5 km east-northeast of San Juan Raboso and 55 km south-southwest of the city of Puebla, in Puebla state.

Millions of people fled into the streets, where they weathered the violent shaking and desperately sought word about the welfare of family and friends. Many are still feared trapped inside the rubble of collapsed buildings as emergency crews and volunteers are trying to search for trapped survivors.

Miguel Angel Mancera, mayor of Mexico City, said at least 44 buildings either partially or completely collapsed because of the quake - the nation's second in two weeks.

10 days ago, Mexico was also hit with a 8.0 magnitude quake which rocked the coastal province of Mexico killing 60 people with reports indicating that over 200 people were left injured. Twenty-one children and five adults were killed at the Enrique Rebsamen primary school, according to this report.

About 250 reported dead, but toll may be much higher. Rescue workers requested silence as they listened for signs of life.

Today's quake comes on the eve of one of the biggest earthquakes to ever hit Mexico. The 7.1 quake stunned central Mexico, killing more than 100 people.

"It is worth recognising that the top travel destinations in Mexico including Cancun, Yucatan, Riviera Maya, Riviera Nayarit, Los Cabos, are completely unaffected by the natural disaster and business continues as usual".
