Ryanair said it is cancelling 40 to 50 flights a day for six weeks after "messing up" its planning of pilot holidays. Details for this Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday followed.

Over 200 canceled flights are either going to or from London Stansted, including some connected to Edinburgh, Manchester, and Birmingham.

It is estimated that around 350,000 passengers could be directly affected, with a Ryanair spokeswoman stating the cancellations will cost Ryanair around €20m. He denied reports that the defection of 140 pilots to a Norwegian rival was a factor.

It said more than 175,000 customers - 55pc of those affected - had now been put on another flight and that every single customer had been emailed on Monday September 18 alerting them to the cancellation, offering alternative flights and outlining the options for a refund and further compensation under European Union 261 rules.

Ryanair explained that they canceled flights in airports that had the most jam-packed schedules, so they can easily cater to those who they put on alternative departures.

A Ryanair spokesman said: "Full EU261 notifications have been sent to all customers and we'll continue to comply fully with all EU261 legislation".
