On Wednesday, President Donald Trump said that he has reached a decision on recertifying or scrapping the deal.

'So I think, as the President has always indicated, he will let you know when he thinks it's useful to let you know, and he doesn't share his forward planning with people.

Mr Trump then called Iran an "economically depleted rogue state" that exports violence, to the widespread dismay of the assembled diplomats from 193 different nations.

"The Iran deal was one of the worst and most one-sided transactions the United States has ever entered into", Trump said.

The deal, which lifted crippling economic sanctions against Iran, was hailed as a major achievement for then USA president Barack Obama and a diplomatic breakthrough in relations between the West and Tehran. He later told reporters that he had decided what to do about the agreement but would not reveal what he had decided.

"One can nearly set the countdown clock to Iran resuming its nuclear activities", he said.

"By violating its global commitments, the new US administration only destroys its own credibility and undermines worldwide confidence in negotiating with it or accepting its word or promise".

Swedish Foreign Minister Margot Wallstrom told newsmen that it was the wrong speech, at the wrong time, to the wrong audience.

Speaking at the UN General Assembly of world leaders, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani responded forcefully to Trump's pugnacious speech on Tuesday by saying Iran would not be pushed around by a relative newcomer to the world stage.

"An American government that chooses to trample on her legal and legitimate worldwide commitments, a conversation with such a government would be a waste of time", Rouhani told reporters on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

Tillerson also said he told Zarif that Washington continues to have "significant issues" with the nuclear deal.

He also slammed what he suggested were double standards in USA foreign policy, telling the audience Iran did not "promote freedom in one place while supporting dictators elsewhere".

The Trump administration recently imposed new economic sanctions on Iran, citing its development of ballistic missiles and the launch of a satellite-carrying rocket into space.
