The reinstatement follows Facebook's decision to "temporarily" disable some of its ad targeting options in the wake of the expose by investigative news organization ProPublica, which actually executed paid advertising campaigns through Facebook's automated self-service ad targeting system aimed at people identified as "Jew haters" and other anti-Semitic descriptions.

Taking personal ownership of the scandal in a Facebook post Sandberg wrote that she was "disgusted and disappointed" that offensive slurs such as "Jew-hater" and "how to burn Jews" were amongst the targeting options Facebook had offered to potential advertisers.

Sandberg wrote she was personally "disgusted" by the news, noting, "as a Jew, as a mother, and as a human being, I know the damage that can come from hate". Visit MarketWatch.com for more information on this news.

The issue was that advertisers were able to target users with words and phrases they manually entered under categories like field of study, school or job title.

Ms Sandberg said the company "never intended or anticipated this functionality being used this way - and that is on us".

For people who want to revisit a Facebook ad, the social giant has introduced a "Recent Ad Activity" feature to all USA users that displays around three months of ads that they engaged by clicking, liking, commenting on or sharing, reported TechCrunch. "That is on us", she says, adding that the site will be "unrelenting" in fixing future abuses.

Sandberg's statement did not address lawmakers' concerns about Facebook's role in swaying elections, but instead focused on the targeting problem revealed by ProPublica.

To test if these ad categories were real, ProPublica paid $30 to target those groups with three "promoted posts".

"We are announcing that we are strengthening our ads targeting policies and tools", Sandberg posted on Facebook.
