Tesla making own chip for its autonomous cars

While Tesla now partners with Nvidia for computing needs within their cars, this deal involves Elon Musk's company relying heavily on tech that's designed by external sources, and it's natural and logical for Tesla to prefer a little less reliance on factors that are beyond their control when building their self-driving machines. The report that tells Tesla is working on its own self-ruling driving chip along with the showcase of the fact that the company is also working on emerging a new hardware suite with increased computing power. Toyota, Audi, and Volvo are among other auto companies working on autonomous vehicles as well.

Shares of Advanced Micro Devices Inc. surged 1.3% on heavy volume in premarket trade Thursday, after a report that Tesla Inc. was working with the chipmaker on Tesla's Autopilot driver-assistance system, in an effort to reduce the reliance on Nvidia Corp.

AMD shares closed up 5 percent Wednesday following the Tesla news. "The net/net here for AMD is that Tesla has confirmed AMD's CPU and GPU roadmaps in a field that nobody was considering as viable; it says that AMD's CPU/GPUs in PC and server markets are the real deal", he added.

"We view the announcement as a near-term concern that should not impact the story over the next several years", Steves wrote in a note to clients.

Tesla is partnering with AMD, according to the source, and will build on top of AMD intellectual property.

In similar fashion, another analyst said the Tesla news is a validation of AMD's technology. Nvidia is up 77.33% and Tesla is up 73.39% this year.
