Russian Federation and China Join Forces for Navy Drills Off North Korean Coast

The war games come amid heightened tensions in the Korean peninsula, where the United States and South Korea have increased their military activity in the wake of North Korea's testing of two intercontinental ballistic missiles as well as its sixth and most powerful nuclear test.

North Korea "may launch ballistic missiles that would fly over our nation again in the future", Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera told reporters Tuesday.

"The increased moves of the U.S. and its vassal forces to impose sanctions and pressure. will only increase our pace towards the ultimate completion of the state nuclear force", the North's foreign ministry spokesman said in a statement carried by its official KCNA news agency.

North Korea joined the U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1990. But the liberal-leaning government of President Moon Jae-in said it has no intention of requesting that the USA bring back such weapons.

South Korea has raised the possibility of reintroducing nuclear weapons to the peninsula.

South Korean Defense Minister Song Young-moo told lawmakers on Monday that it is "not proper" to reintroduce USA nuclear weapons.

Meanwhile, China's Communist Party newspaper on Monday criticized the United States for demanding that Beijing put more pressure on North Korea to rein in its weapons programs.

"Developments in the peninsula nuclear issue up to this point prove that, no matter whether it is military threats in words or in action, they can not promote and advance a resolution", the foreign ministry spokesman, Lu Kang, said.

'We Will Be Putting More Sanctions on North Korea'
The order gives the US treasury department discretion to sanction foreign banks that conduct transactions involving North Korea . China is North Korea's number one trading partner, but the USA has often been hesitant to crack down on Chinese banks.

China and Russian Federation have repeatedly called for a peaceful solution and talks to resolve the issue.

On Sunday, US Air Force flew B-1 bombers and F-35 stealth fighter jets over the Korean Peninsula with allied fighter jets from South Korea and Japan.

The discussion of whether to shoot down a North Korean missile comes as United States intelligence has assessed that North Korea's KN-17 (Hwasong 12) intermediate range ballistic missile has proven so successful in recent flight tests that Pyongyang now counts on it as part of its strategic deterrence against the U.S., according to a USA official familiar with the latest intelligence analysis.

A Swedish arms watchdog says the global number of nuclear warheads dropped past year, but it seems China, India, North Korea and Pakistan are expanding the size of their atomic arsenals.
