The plea was filed by West Bengal State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (WBSCPCR) in the apex court which has already fixed a PIL, filed by two Rohingya Muslim refugees challenging their deportation, for hearing on October 3.

An earlier copy of the affidavit that had been received by the lawyers representing the petitioners in the deportation case last week but was termed as "incomplete" by the MHA had mentioned that "There is also a serious potential and possibility of eruption of violence against the Myanmar government/its diplomatic missions" by the Rohingyas - a mention that has now been deleted from the final affidavit submitted before the apex court.

Speaking to The Himalayan Times on telephone, Mohammad Shahid, 20, a Rohigya refugee, said he left his country a year ago abandoning his family and property.

There were an estimated 1.1 million Rohingyas in Rakhine state before the current crisis, though almost half have fled into Bangladesh where they are cramped into ill-equipped camps. "That is why we should not commit the mistake of according the status of illegal immigrants as refugees in the name of human rights", he said. "The Rohingya issue can be resolved only if the Myanmar government takes back the more than 800,000 Rohingyas in Bangladesh and in other parts of the world as citizens", Mr. Alam said. The Rohingyas have never been granted Myanmar citizenship, despite having resided in the country for centuries.

Myanmar has denied rights groups' accusations that it is trying to drive the minority community out of Rakhine state, saying it is only targeting militants.
