"The Pentagon said the mission was created to show the many military options U.S. President Donald Trump had to deal with the grave threat presented by the North Korean nuclear program".

Kim Jong Un also said Saturday his regime would complete its final goal to "establish the equilibrium of real force with the USA and make the US rulers dare not talk about military option or [North Korea]".

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has said nuclear weapons will not bring security for North Korea's government, amid an escalating war of words between officials from the two countries.

"The increased moves of the US and its vassal forces to impose sanctions and pressure ... will only increase our pace towards the ultimate completion of the state nuclear force", the North's foreign ministry spokesman said in a statement carried by its official KCNA news agency.

"This is the farthest north of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) any USA fighter or bomber aircraft have flown off North Korea's coast in the 21st century, underscoring the seriousness with which we take (North Korea's) reckless behavior", said Pentagon spokeswoman Dana White.

The strength of the quake was much lower than the tremors registered during any of North Korea's previous nuclear tests, including its first detonation in 2006, which triggered a 4.1-magnitude quake. USA nuclear weapons were withdrawn from the Korean peninsula in the early 1990s at the close of the Cold War.

On Sept. 3, North Korea conducted an underground nuclear test that was by far its most powerful to date.

"Developments in the peninsula nuclear issue up to this point prove that, no matter whether it is military threats in words or in action, they can not promote and advance a resolution", the foreign ministry spokesman, Lu Kang, said.

North Korea was quick to announce it could conduct another hydrogen bomb test in the Pacific. The test came in the wake of tougher sanctions imposed by the United Nations following the country's sixth nuclear test early this month.

The volatile dictatorship on Monday scoffed at the United Nations Security Council's condemnation of the missile test and vowed to continue its goal of becoming a nuclear state.

President Donald Trump, speaking at the UN, threatened to "totally destroy" North Korea if forced to defend the United States or its allies.

President Trump, though, mocked the regime's leader in a series of Sunday tweets, referring to Kim Jong Un as "Rocket Man".

The sanctions included limits on import of crude oil and oil products, a ban on textile exports and new visas for North Korean oversees workers.
