No statement from Dhaka as Bangladesh FM meets Russia's Lavrov at UN

Relations since Trump moved into the White House have been strained, but Lavrov said Russia had been pleased by parts of Trump's first address to the United Nations, which analysts say Russians saw as acknowledging the need for the U.S. to share the world stage and avoid interference in other countries' affairs and the impulse to dictate what they should do.

"The situation surrounding the North Korean nuclear issue needs to be managed stably so that tensions will not become overly intensified or accidental military clashes will not destroy peace", Moon said.

The Russian foreign minister's comments follow the most recent escalatory back and forth between the USA and North Korea.

"While no state now in possession of nuclear weapons will be signing along with us, this treaty nevertheless represents an important step towards a nuclear-free world", he said earlier this week.

As I said, it was a remarkable statement.

Mr Lavrov, whose country is a signatory to the deal, said Russian Federation strongly disagreed with that stance.

"When you consider him and his father, it was only when such threats were made that negotiations did happen", Macron told reporters.

Lavrov however, has said the U.S.'s excuses for not pursuing the proposal are inadequate.

Lavrov said Russian Federation would welcome any efforts at mediation, saying "the mediators could be one of the neutral European countries".

Opening this year's gathering, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that "fiery talk can lead to fatal misunderstandings" that could ignite a nuclear war, and called for a political solution.

Tensions have continued to rise since North Korea carried out its sixth nuclear test on September 3, prompting a new round of United Nations sanctions.

Pyongyang's stated aim is to be able to target the USA mainland and the nation has flaunted the advances in its weapons programme in recent weeks, with the September test of what it said was a miniaturised H-bomb capable of being loaded onto a rocket.

In a Thursday interview with The New York Times, Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif dismissed any re-negotiations of the 2015 nuclear deal, saying Washington seeks getting more Iranian concessions under the accord with no new concessions from itself or other signatories in return.
