The victor is a step closer to facing of other undefeated heavyweight champions, American Deontay Wilder and Brit Anthony Joshua to unify the belts.

New Zealand world champion in the heavyweight version WBO Joseph Parker struck Hughie fury's first defeat in professional ring. "Hughie is good at surviving - there were three times where I thought Joe was close to knocking him out but he survived".

The 23-year-old attempted to emulate cousin Tyson's victory over Wladimir Klitschko in November 2015 looking to frustrate Parker with his jab-and-move game plan.

Parker kept chasing and had more success in the second half of the fight to secure the win that keeps him in contention for bigger fights next year, possibly against Fury's fellow Briton Anthony Joshua. His promoter David Higgins says he has earned between $1 million and $1.5 million for the fight.

He still has his most valuable asset though, the WBO heavyweight title, and as long as it remains in his possession, bigger and more lucrative fights will come.

Trainer Kevin Barry said Parker had overcome the "most awkward" fighting style in the division by beating Fury, an opponent he said he did not want for his man.

"After that, we could look at the victor of Haye vs Bellew, or Joshua".

Two judges had Parker winning 118-110, while the third scored it 114-all.

"I don't know what the judge was seeing - he kept missing". The reviewers came back with a glowing report for the judges.

Hennessy promised a bid to "protest and overturn" the result, insisting Fury's back-foot performance, which most neutral observers agreed had not quite been enough to take the title in a poor fight, had offered "shades of Ali".

I can't join the chorus of people saying Hughie was robbed.

There is an common adage in boxing that to be certain of victory, a challenger needs to rip the title away from a champion.
