North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un on Friday called Donald Trump as "mentally deranged" and warned he will make the USA president "pay dearly" for threatening his nation, reports state news agency KCNA.

In a fiery speech at the United Nations General Assembly in New York Saturday, Ri responded to a string of threats from Mr. Trump throughout the week - particularly Mr. Trump's threat to "totally destroy" North Korea if the U.S.is "forced to defend itself or its allies".

Mr Kim had said the United Nations speech - which was boycotted by North Korean diplomats - was "the most ferocious declaration of war in history".

Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho spoke to reporters in NY during the UN General Assembly shortly after North Korean leader Kim Jong Un made an unprecedented televised statement, accusing Trump of being "mentally deranged".

Mr Kim did not specify what action he would take against the United States or Mr Trump, whom he called a "mentally deranged USA dotard" in the latest bout of insults the two leaders have traded.

For reference, the US agency recorded a 6.3 magnitude quake after North Korea's hydrogen bomb test on September 3, its sixth of a nuclear weapon.

"Evil President" Donald Trump called Pyongyang's leader "rocket man", further escalating rhetoric over the North's nuclear weapons and missile programs.

Overnight, seismic activity was detected near the area where North Korea conducted its most recent nuclear test, and China's state news agency said it was because of an explosion.

The announcement from Beijing came at the end of a week that saw tensions ratchet up between the United States and North Korea, with the leaders of both countries trading insults.

Donald Trump has hit back at Kim Jong Un after the North Korean dictator called him "deranged" in a bullish statement. Japan and South Korea, the two closest allies of USA in the region, have claimed threat from the spree of missile tests conducted by the North.

Kim said he is "thinking hard" about his response and that he would "tame the mentally deranged U". It did not name specific weapons systems.

South Korea's weather agency said it was analysing the nature of the quake.

"All relevant parties should exercise restraint instead of provoking each other", said foreign minister spokesman Lu Kang. French Sports Minister Laura Flessel said France's team would not travel to the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in South Korea if its security could not be guaranteed.
